I think as a student we need time to relax and enjoy the freedom of summer. "Enjoy the little things." As a student I have learned from experience how exhausted mentally and physically I am during the school year so I need my vacation. Also, teachers need their vacation too. The school also needs the break in order to get construction done. During the school year I feel sad because I have to see people I don't like. So in conclusion I think we need the summer vacation.

Don't teachers also need students to learn and retain knowledge? Isn't this the ultimate goal of the school?

students should have summer vacation because school is very stressful. I have had many meltdowns and get just physically and emotionally exhausted. we as students need time to relax and let our brain rest. also I get no sleep during the school year because I have many extra curricular activities so I don't get home until late and then have to do lots of homework. I on average probably get 5hrs of sleep at the most. summer is a great time for me to catch up on my sleep. Summer vacation also helps the school save money and the teachers time to do their work. it also gives time for the school to do any construction needed. everyone benefits from summer vacation

Summer is an important part of a kids life. When a kid first goes to school he cry's, due to the fact his parents are leaving him or her with strangers. Studies have shown kids hit depression during school. Another study showed that summer is healthy for kids. Alas summer should continue to be part of school.

In this blog, I have learned that if we don't have summer, little kids would not have time to spend with their older siblings if they are in extra things to do with school, such as football, band, cross country, etc. WE need to think about the school also. If we didn't have summer, the school couldn't go through construction on the school asuch as, new flooring, new field, new buildings, etc. As a student at Shelbyville High School, I know for a fact teens don't get enough sleep or eat right because it is always late nights for us. On average, we only sleep about 6 hours a night but science says to be a healthy person you need at least 8. WE are shorted 2 hours a night because we stay out late because of school.

In order to achieve maximum brain comprehention skills students need an occasional break. The stress levels are super high during the school year especially if you are having to take exams. Also, students work hard during the school year to learn and pass classes I think they deserve a reward. Summer breaks also give time for remodeling and saving money.

Yes, but the summer is a resting time to relax the brain.

A lack of sleep can be harmful to a young person's body, however, when a student graduates and gets a job, or goes to college they will be much better prepared to handle the stress. If a student retains knowledge they will also be more successful in their endeavors. Many students do not rest during summer vacation but actually stay up much later.

Your argument is invalid, due to the fact that all students have different knowledge level than other. For one student it can be a piece of cake, and for an other it could be a piece of steel.

After reading the article, I feel as if summer is hurtful to young students because they forget about everything they learned and the teachers have top reteach it when they could have been learning new things. Studies show teachers spend at least 6 weeks on average teaching the same thing that the students learned last year.

While I agree with most of what Angel Hubble says, the good points of summer beyond exhaustion and the dislikes of others. Summer is also an emotional time for those who rarely see their family like smaller children in Elementary school and college. The emotional state of those unable to be close to their families during the school year begins to fall apart after being away from loved ones for so long. This is a better explanation of why we need summer.

As a student I have experienced first hand how tired and drained all students feel during the school year. As the school year progresses it feels as if the assignments pile up higher and higher and makes students feel as if there is no end. This is why we should have a summer vacation. Students of all ages as well as teachers need this break to relax from all the stress that is being put on students and teachers. The stress of the assignments only doubles when students are in many extra curricular activities. Usually being in multiple extra curricular activities results in lack of sleep which can only be caught up on in the summer, therefore we should keep having a summer vacation.

Life is stressful. School is an education tool to prepare students to handle it. Extra curricular activities, college classes, student jobs are all the student's choice.

but how can the school know how stressful their job will be they could work at Whataburger and don't need that much knowledge and school is stressing them for no reason.

In this blog, I realize we need summer, because as a student, I know students get emotionally, mentally, and physically worn out. We get at least 6 hours of sleep every night, and sometimes we even skip supper to get our homework done. Also, our school cannot go under construction while we are in school so we need summer to redecorate our school. We also need summer because little kids cannot spend as much time with their family, but during summer they can spend family time with them.

Being a student I know the significant amount of stress that major tests at the end of the school year can cause. Summer vacation is a way to help relieve some of that stress. Summer is beneficial not only to the students but the school as well. To be able to accomplish some of the more timely construction projects we need three months of students being and faculty being away. Summer is also a time to enable some students to see family that they don't get to see on a regular basis. In conclusion, summer vacation is a necessity for students, faculty, and the school.

I believe I have a more thorough explanation than just being tired and not like seeing people you don't care for.

I believe that summer is an important part of every day life. When a student does not get a break from all of the work that they have acquired; they lose sleep due to all of the work. Studies have shown that students need 8 to 9 hours of sleep to fully function and process the information they were given. As a student I have personally learned that having a ton of work and sleep will affect grade scores. Teachers also have this problem. If teachers do not get enough sleep and free time, they will not be fully functional and will not have the ability to teach at maximum efficiency. In the end both teachers and students need summer to allow them a break from all of the hard work, so they can work to their full potential.

Countless children each year look forward to the freedom and fun promised to them by summer break. For many, it is a rare period of time that is dedicated to spending time with family and friends that they almost never get to see. Most parents work long hours, sacrificing valuable time with their children. Relatives such as aunts and uncles often live too far away to visit, becoming distant memories in the eyes of their nieces and nephews. Kids work hard all year to ensure that they excel in school, and most of them participate in several extracurricular activities in addition to their required academics. These activities require even harder work along with long before and after school practice hours. Teenagers need about nine and a half hours of sleep each night to function at their best. Staying at school for the excessive amount of time that they need to each day, plus homework afterwards, leaves the amount of sleep students actually get at about six hours. This incredible amount of work can cause students to short circuit due to the overwhelming stress that they are under every day. As a Shelbyville student, I can confirm this. I have had many sleepless nights where I stayed up working on projects or studying for UiL. Sometimes all the practices, homework, studying, and household duties on top of it all, were too much for me to handle at the same time. About a week prior to the beginning of school this year, I began seeing television-like static in my vision that made it hard to read and write, and even difficult to focus at times. After seeing both an eye doctor and a neurologist, I received the probable diagnosis of a silent migraine that has, though uncommon, persisted for several weeks, as a result causing my impaired vision. Anticipating the upcoming school year and all its enormous piles of work gave me enough anxiety that I now see everything as if it is an old, grainy photo. Summer is a time for mental and emotional rest, with relief from the constant strain of never-ending assignments. With this vacation, students are able to participate in activities that they don't have enough time to participate in during the school year. Many kids spend their vacation time at summer internships, jobs, or work on drivers ed. While this time of rest is beneficial to the students, it also benefits the school. Costs such as electricity bills are reduced, teachers can rest and plan for the next year, and time for construction is provided. Summer is an essential time of rest and regrowth, and should not be disregarded as a waste of time.

Well Ben, I understand that but its good to get a break from seeing people that we don't care for because you don't want them snapping on them and there be a fight.
Give up Ben I win.

Summer vacation is a time for students to spend time with family and friends and enjoy each others company. If you agree than you are wrong because summer vacation is a time to get away from the stress that school puts on the students. As a high school student I can strongly agree to the fact that teachers do expect a lot from us and for some reason they think we don't have a life or that it revolves only around school; and teachers wonder why we sleep in their class. Teachers also do not take in the fact that some students are having family problems at home, for instance the student's mom has cancer or the student's dad is out of work and this student is having trouble doing work or concentrating due to all the problems he or she is experiencing but teachers blindly miss it all the time. Summer vacation is a stress and worry free time, so we, the students, can recharge and prepare ourselves for the up coming school year. Summer vacation is a time where we can be us without the worry of failing or doing something wrong for a least three months

As a student of Shelbyville High School, I believe that we should always have a summer vacation. A long school year takes an emotional, physical, and mental toll on us as students as well as teachers. During summer vacation most students spend more time with family, and without summer there is hardly any time for family bonding. Just think about the little elementary children that can not wait to spend time with their older sibling that they just love so much or their parents. Summer vacation allows families to spend that extra time together. As a student I have realized that I do not eat healthy or get enough sleep, but during summer I get to relax and not stress over homework. I know that life is full of stress, but some high school students have way more stress then a teenager should. With that being said I think it is healthier to have summer vacation to let our body and mind rest, and get prepared for the next year, for teachers as well.

Summer vacation is a vital break for the development of the mind of the student. While a student does forget information over the course of the three months out of school, they also retain information learned from the previous year and also the years beforehand. I believe this shows the individual's ability and brain capacity at which they learn and remember, and this can help the teacher to focus on where the individual stands. Teachers and schools teach the class as one, and a student may not have the same learning abilities as another. There could be one student in the class who is ahead in the class, knowing what is being taught already, and then another student can be farther behind and struggling to keep up. Knowing a student's limitations can help place a student in certain classes that will help teach them on the level needed.
Another important note of summer vacation is the emotional trip lots of people take. In the summer time, I am always on vacation with my grandparents, as it is the only time I can see them for an extended period of time. For me to not have summer break, I wouldn’t get to spend time with them having fun on vacation and such. Going on these vacations with them can also be educational. Two years ago, my grandparents and I went to Pennsylvania for the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg in the civil war. They had entire battle reenactments and the actors who were soldiers even slept out in crude tents like the soldiers from back then did as well. With this first-hand experience, I can always easily remember facts about the Civil War and the knowledge gained from those summers has kept with me for years.
Summer break is important for the minds of many students and children alike. For the smaller children, whom are kept home all day because their parents cannot afford daycare, being alone can be a healthy way for them to develop a sense of independence they will use for when they go off to college once older. They would not feel as dependent on their parents as a child who spent most of their summer with an adult to do everything for them. For high school students, they are old enough to be left alone without anyone to watch them, and it in turn gives them a feel of how it will be in a few years when they set off for college and have to care for themselves and a living space as if it was their own, such as an apartment or dorm room. Being left at home without an adult can be beneficial in this way. Summer break is extremely vital in the sense it helps students develop in more ways than just knowledge. It is also crucial to give the young minds a rest from constant assault of new information every week. Yes, students need summer break, in my opinion.

After reading and reviewing the article, my opinion over summer is still the same. Summer should not be taken away from students. Summer is essential for multiple reasons. If summer were taken from little kids with divorced parents, they wouldn't be able to spend time with both parents. Most children live with one parent during school, and then they spend summer with the other parent. On another note, summer isn't just necessary for students. Without summer many corporations would run out of business, for example Banana Boat. During summer parents take their children swimming, and they don't want them to get sun burned. So they use sunscreen. If kids were always in school they would never have the time to go swimming, so there would be no need for sunscreen. Also there are tourist attractions, they need summer for people to have time to take elongated vacations and visit that certain place or thing. If kids were constantly in school they wouldn't have time to take a cruise to Cozumel. Therefor companies, that make money on people going on vacation or just swimming, would go broke. Lastly, students just need summer. Many students like myself get emotionally and mentally hurt over all the stress we face in school. The fact that every aspect of life is difficult is understandable, but we still need time to let our minds and body rest. Most students do not acquire enough sleep on school nights. Many of the students have extra curricular activities and jobs to do. For example, students get homework almost every day, and then they have to stay after for band or athletics. Then after that, they have to go to work in order to have money to pay for things. Many parents have bills to pay and mouths to feed, so there are students that touch their hearts and get jobs so that their parents have less things to worry about. As a result of those activities, students usually go to sleep late and wake up early for school. Therefor they do not acquire enough sleep. There is a limit to how much of lack of sleep humans can get before they pass out and die of exhaustion. So in conclusion I believe summer is essential for students and everyone else.

After reading this article, I think that summer should be either shortened or taken away because of all the kids that don't have anyone to take care of them during the day while their parents are working. As a student, I know that because when I was in elementary school during the summer i was mostly on my own with little to eat and no one to look after me. I had no brothers or sisters I was alone.Studies show that 65% of single parent or two parent working homes cannot afford childcare. This means that those kids aren't at daycare and most of them dont have anyone to watch them. This is why I think kids summer vacation should be either shorter or they shouldn't have it.

After reading the article, though it had good points, I believe schools should still have summer vacation. The purpose of summer vacation is for people to relax from stress. Having too much stress in your life isn't healthy, so it's best to have some time off away from it.
